Baptism is the sacrament through which one is received into the Church

Through Baptism:

we receive the full forgiveness of sins

we “put on Christ”

we become members of His Body - the Church

To remind them of their Baptism, Orthodox Christians throughout their life usually wear a small Cross, hung round the neck on a chain during their Baptismal Service.

Immediately after Baptism, the Orthodox Christian is Confirmed, “Chrismated” (“miropomazan” in Serbian) with the Chrism (in Serbian “myro”) by the Priest.

  • The Sponsor (Godparent) of the person to be baptised must be an Orthodox Christian over the age of 15.

  • Adults (catechumens) could be baptised without a Sponsor, in exceptional situations.

  • Non-Orthodox Christians wishing to enter the Orthodox Church are received by the Sacrament of Holy Chrism if they have been previously baptised in the Name of the Holy Trinity.

  • Non-Orthodox Christians cannot be godparents at the baptism but can be involved in a preparation and organization of the service and given a role of a patron or a matron of honor, only with the presence of an Orthodox person as a Godparent.

Following items should be brought to church on the day of Baptism:

  • New white clothes for the person getting christened (Clothes put on during the christening service or at the end of service, not before the christening) FOR ADULTS: New white clothes and a white robe or a special christening dress/gown (a bathrobe bought at any retail store should be sufficient).

  • 2 white towels (1 bath towel & 1 hand towel)

  • 1 candle (bee-wax, from church)

  • 1 bottle of olive oil

  • 1 neckless & cross

There is no "cost" to get baptized - donations accepted

The Parish Priest will issue a Baptism Certificate, which will be presented after the Service or mailed soon after the christening date.
